How to repair MDAC

Important note: These instructions do not work with Windows XP Service Pack 2. You need to do this instead.

1. Download MDAC package

  1. Download the latest MDAC package from Microsoft and save this file to disk.
    Download MDAC 2.8 now

  2. After download has finished run the file MDAC_Typ.exe and follow the instructions of the setup.

  3. Now verify if the problem has been solved. If not, continue reading this page.

2. Use MDAC Component Checker

Microsoft offers the tool MDAC Component Checker which you can use to check the consistency your MDAC installation.

  1. Download MDAC Component Checker

  2. After Download has finished run the file ComponentChecker_Setup.exe to uncompress the files into the  folder (C:\ComponentChecker).

  3. Now change to this folder and run the file cc.exe (it should run automatically after setup).

  4. Select the option Perform analysis against selected version, choose
    MDAC 2.8 RTM
    , and click OK.

  5. After a short analysis you will see a report with several information. Especially the  MISMATCH - section below File Details indicates potential problems.

  6. In the right pane you will see files names which are expected to be present in a different version. The Component Checker compares the available file versions with a list of version that were delivered with MDAC 2.8.

The column Mismatch Field shows which version is expected and FileVersion the actual available version.

  7. Since a regular installation of MDAC does not seam to help you must manually replace the concerned files into the listed locations. Unpack the file mdacxpak.cab out of the package MDAC_TYP.exe in a temporary folder with Winzip.

  8. The file mdacxpak.cab can be unpacked with Winzip again. It contains the most important MDAC files. Copy the files concerned files into the folder as stated in the  Path column.

3. Re-register MDAC

Finally re-register the MDAC files with the small MDAC Register Tool. This tool has been created for a different software but you can still use it to re-register both the MDAC files and the MS JET files. Follow the following steps:

  1. Run the tool (MDACRepair.exe).

  2. Click the Re-register MDAC button

  3. Go on the JET tab and click the Re-register MS Jet 4.0 button.

  4. Exit the tool.

Afterwards restart your PC.

Fix for Windows XP SP2

If you are running Service Pack 2 of Windows XP, you can still use the component checker (see step #2 above) as the first step, but you will be performing the analysis against "MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2".

Again, as in step #2 above, if there is ANYTHING that does not match with what is expected, you should proceed with the following instructions:

How to repair a copy of MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP with SP2 installed.

  1. Right-click on C:\Windows\Inf\mdac.inf and choose "Install".

  2. When prompted for the XP SP2 media, point to the i386 folder in one of these places:
    1. The \i386 folder on the XP SP2 CDROM. If you are unlucky enough to have a CDROM that has XPSP2.EXE in the root of the CDROM, and no \i386 folder, then you will have to create an i386 folder using a command like this:
      XPSP2.EXE /X:C:\XpSp2
      Then point to C:\XpSp2\i386.
    2. The \i386 folder on a slipstreamed XP SP2 installation CDROM.

  3. When prompted for the XP installation media, point to the i386 folder in one of these places:
    1. C:\Windows\ServicepackFiles\i386 (it may not like this location, if not, go to the next one)

    2. The \i386 folder on your XP installation CDROM.

This reinstalls and repairs MDAC 2.8.
